Every year, thousands of dogs end up in a shelter in the Netherlands. Experts expect an increase in this number in the upcoming period, when people go back to the office after working from home during the corona crisis. Despite the good care of staff and volunteers, the shelter can be a turbulent experience for dogs. Researchers investigated if dogs can adapt to their new environment based on their nocturnal activity.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sciencedaily/plants_animals/dogs/~4/dOftsAYYLHU

You know your dog gets your gist when you point and say 'go find the ball' and he scampers right to it. This knack for understanding human gestures may seem unremarkable, but it's a complex cognitive ability that is rare in the animal kingdom. New research comparing dog puppies to human-reared wolf pups offers some clues to how dogs' unusual people-reading skills came to be.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sciencedaily/plants_animals/dogs/~4/UQe-RbCuC84

About 100 additional wolves died over the winter in Wisconsin as a result of the delisting of grey wolves under the Endangered Species Act, alongside the 218 wolves killed by licensed hunters during Wisconsin's first public wolf hunt, according to new research. A majority of these additional, uncounted deaths are due to cryptic poaching, where poachers hide evidence of illegal killings.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sciencedaily/plants_animals/dogs/~4/_absHMbiaC0

Researchers have been the first to determine the cause for the nonsyndromic early-onset hereditary canine hearing loss in Rottweilers. The gene defect was identified in a gene relevant to the sense of hearing. The study can also promote the understanding of mechanisms of hearing loss in human.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sciencedaily/plants_animals/dogs/~4/z6W3DAmKNlM

Researchers have discovered a new coronavirus, found in a child with pneumonia in Malaysia in 2018, that appears to have jumped from dog to human. If confirmed as a pathogen, the novel canine-like coronavirus could represent the eighth unique coronavirus known to cause disease in humans. The discovery also suggests coronaviruses are being transmitted from animals to humans more commonly than was previously thought.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sciencedaily/plants_animals/dogs/~4/v9gOZSDq3Cg

The world's largest terrestrial conservation area is located in southern Africa and covers 520,000 square kilometers spanning five countries. A study now shows that the endangered African wild dog mostly remains within the boundaries of the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA) when dispersing, thus highlighting the relevance of such a large-scale conservation initiative for maintaining key wildlife corridors of threatened species.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sciencedaily/plants_animals/dogs/~4/H7naPvD33O8

A study encompassing some 9,000 dogs demonstrated that fearfulness, age, breed, the company of other members of the same species and the owner's previous experience of dogs were associated with aggressive behavior towards humans. The findings can potentially provide tools for understanding and preventing aggressive behavior.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sciencedaily/plants_animals/dogs/~4/L1mE5s1yoW4

Researchers found a cause for severe epilepsy resulting in death in Parson Russell Terrier puppies at a few months of age. A change in the PITRM1 gene can lead to a dysfunction of mitochondria, the cellular energy pumps. Concurrently, amyloid-beta accumulation and widespread neurodegeneration associated with Alzheimer's disease were identified in the puppies' brains. Changes to the PITRM1 gene in humans also cause a severe but slowly progressing brain disease.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sciencedaily/plants_animals/dogs/~4/iEJyZfZPegs

Gray wolves are among the largest predators to have survived the extinction at the end of the last ice age. A new study analysing teeth and bones shows that the wolves may have survived by adapting their diet over thousands of years --- from a primary reliance on horses during the Pleistocene, to caribou and moose today.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sciencedaily/plants_animals/dogs/~4/UOckykQqSqU

Dogs are one of humanity's most-beloved animal companions. They share our homes and seem to reciprocate our affections. But could this emotional bond extend into feelings of jealousy? To help answer that question, a team of researchers gauged the reactions of a group of dogs when their owners appeared to shower attention on a perceived rival.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sciencedaily/plants_animals/dogs/~4/J4s4NVt8ttE

A new dingo study collates the results from over 5000 DNA samples of wild canines across Australia. It found that 99 per cent of animals tested were pure dingoes or dingo-dominant hybrids - and that there were almost no feral dogs in the country.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sciencedaily/plants_animals/dogs/~4/hm-dGMFwX48

Dogs infected with the Leishmania parasite smell more attractive to female sand flies than males, say researchers. Leishmania parasites are transmitted from infected dogs to people by sand flies when they bite. As only female sand flies transmit the parasite, researchers wanted to understand if infection made dogs more attractive to the insect. Globally over 350 million people are at risk of leishmaniasis, with up to 300,000 new cases annually.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sciencedaily/plants_animals/dogs/~4/k4_HsRjMNmA
