A survey of a sample of new first-year college students leaving pets at home and found that 75% experienced some level of pet separation anxiety -- with one in four reporting moderate to severe symptoms. The students who had higher anxiety tended to be those who treated their pets more like people, identifying them as friends, sleeping in the same room and generally spending a lot of time with them. Students who had dogs at home also tended to report more attachment to their pets -- and more separation anxiety -- than those with cats and other types of pets.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sciencedaily/plants_animals/dogs/~4/RJ9J2D5FwyQ

Researchers identify a strain of bacteria on healthy cats that produces antibiotics against severe skin infections. The findings may soon lead to new bacteriotherapies for humans and their pets, wherein cat bacteria is applied via topical cream or spray.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sciencedaily/plants_animals/dogs/~4/hcAJTiqRHz0

Events of jaguars predating on and attacking dogs are poorly documented throughout the Americas. Researchers from Mexico and Germany report in detail jaguar attacks on 20 dogs at a tourist site in the Mexican Caribbean. In addition, they describe an initiative proposed by locals as well as national and international NGOs to prevent human-jaguar conflicts due to pet predation.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sciencedaily/plants_animals/dogs/~4/YMxp97HEvfU

Researchers have developed a new comprehensive questionnaire for surveying feline personality and behavior. A dataset of more than 4,300 cats representing 26 breed groups revealed seven personality and behavior traits, with significant differences observed between breeds.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sciencedaily/plants_animals/dogs/~4/IvbxaTSBBoY

Recent dog breeding practices have loaded up cavalier King Charles spaniels with disease-causing mutations, including variants linked to the common heart condition, myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD), according to new findings.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sciencedaily/plants_animals/dogs/~4/xEqDo8XO2VM

Carnivorous animals lack key genes needed to detect and respond to infection by pathogens, a study has found. Farming large numbers of carnivores, like mink, could allow the formation of undetected 'disease reservoirs', in which a pathogen could spread to many animals and mutate to become a risk to human health.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sciencedaily/plants_animals/dogs/~4/olxDEuUol8Y

Artificial nest experiments demonstrated that the raccoon dog, an alien species abundant in Finland, is a more common duck nest predator than any indigenous mammalian species. The species depredated nests on shorelines as well as in forests, rural landscapes and urban areas.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sciencedaily/plants_animals/dogs/~4/_r4vW2iySh4

Scientists have unraveled the enigma of inheritance of coat color patterns in dogs. The researchers discovered that a genetic variant responsible for a very light coat in dogs and wolves originated more than two million years ago in a now extinct relative of the modern wolf.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sciencedaily/plants_animals/dogs/~4/h889XP9nUls

Although cats have lived alongside humans for millennia, it remains a dogs' world. This bias has historically bled into science as well. It's time for cats to get their day, argues veterinary medicine experts. Cats, they say, have the potential to be a valuable model organism for geneticists, as the feline genome is ordered similarly to humans.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sciencedaily/plants_animals/dogs/~4/-qGupZ6MdH4

Forensics specialists can use a commercial assay targeting mitochondrial DNA to accurately discriminate between wolf, coyote and dog species. The genetic information could aid authorities in prosecuting hunting jurisdiction violations and preserving protected species.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sciencedaily/plants_animals/dogs/~4/VMwdFBWLL40
