Third Annual Eye Clinic - Report

November 5th, 2006 - This year we held our Eye Clinic at Misty Meadow Kennels. I would like to thank Marcella Cobb for allowing us to use the facility and to everyone else that helped to put on a successful event. We had a total of 50 dogs coming from as far as Longview, WA, The Dalles and Bend, OR.

The Kennel’s grooming room proved to be a great holding area for dogs with the bathtub room adjacent to do the exams. In the training building we had plenty of room for sign-up and socializing. It was a cold and rainy day and having a large warmed indoor area where all the dogs could be, was a bonus.

Beth and Claire Laufer from Longview, WA, arrived first at about 8:00 o’clock to help set up. Signs were put up and items from Catherine “Cap” Belin’s estate were set out for sale with the money going toward a memorial trophy. The total collected was $183. Brad, Peggy, and Marie helped with setting up. I brought bagels and Betsy brought Krispy Kreme donuts for the morning. Betsy, Susan, and Earl got things ready for the potluck.

As people started arriving, Marie did the sign up for the exams and collected the monies. Susan McAlpin donated a wooden ‘dog’ that holds treats, food, and leashes. Each dog exam received a ticket for a drawing with Marie winning.

Also, thanks to Dr Scherlie for doing the exams at a wonderful rate so many of us with multiple dogs were able to have them seen. There were 50 dogs total, 46-Cairns, 1-Rottwieler, 1-Bulldog, 1-French Bulldog, and 1-Airedale.

The following breakdown pertains to the Cairn Terriers only:

  • 32-CERF’d Normal
  • 6-Punctate Cataract-insignificant
  • 1-Endothelial pigment cataract
  • 1-Vitreous floater
  • 1-Pigment dots, presumed congenital, not impairing vision
  • 4-Cataract, presumed age-related, not impairing vision
  • 1-Cataract, presumed inherited, juvenile onset, not impairing vision
  • 1-Ocular Melanosis (diagnosed and will be followed)
  • 3-Cataract, presumed age related, blind (17 yr old, 15 yr old, 14 yr old)

I again want to thank everybody for taking the time to come to the clinic, not only for a great time getting together but most of all for the betterment of the breed.
