Eye Clinic

Sunday, October 18

Eye Clinic
Dogtown, 335 NE 8th Street, Gresham, OR (map)
Dr. Paul Scherlie Jr., DVM, Diplomate ACVO.
Exams 10:00 - 12:00.
Cost: $20 Cairn Terriers, $25 all other breeds.

Appointments will be on a more-or-less first-come, first-served basis. Please allow 15 minutes for eye dilation prior to exam.  Multiple dogs from the same home can be scheduled back-to-back to make it easier for you to get them all done at once.

Please plan to bring your Cairn Terriers (other breeds are also welcome) to our Eye Clinic.

Based on what is known from research, pet Cairn Terriers over the age of two should be checked every year for signs of ocular melanosis and for eye disease generally until they are at least 13 years old. The exams are painless and take only a few minutes. If you read the attached information we think you’ll agree that regular eye health screenings are important for our own dogs’ health and well-being, as well as for our breed’s future.

If you have a Cairn over 12 years old who screens clear for OM, you will be offered a free DNA swab kit if you would like to contribute your dog’s DNA to OM research. For more information about ocular melanosis, please read the attached PDF documents and the research reports on the Cairn Terrier Club of America’s health-related concerns page.

By offering these clinics we’re doing our best to make it affordable, easy, and fun to get this important screening done, for everyone from the owner of a single pet, to active breeders. We are grateful to Dr. Scherlie for his time and contribution of reduced fees to support our efforts.

See you on October 18!

Cairntastic Day 2009 at McIver Park

Columbia River Cairn Terrier Club invites you and your Cairn Terrier to a Cairntastic Day Saturday, September 5, 2009 at Milo McIver Park (day use space B2), Estacada, OR.

Fun and Games begin at 10:00 AM and lasts until you leave.

This year we’re all about the picnic, socializing, and having low-key fun with our two and four legged friends. We will have a “Best Trick” contest for the dogs. For humans we’ll have a game based on Fun Facts about various members. We’ll also have quilt-block making, a ladder toss game, and other mild diversions. Cairn racing will be available all day - free!

Lunch will be pot luck with the club providing pulled pork sandwiches, drinks, and cutlery. Your sides, salads, or desserts are welcomed.

Introducing the Barley Cup - In memory of the first (and three-time) “Fastest Cairn Terrier in the Northwest” we have commissioned the Barley Cup. Anyone wishing to compete for possession of the traveling Barley Cup may enter an optional Trophy Dash competition, which will run all day amidst the regular, free, racing. There will be a modest entry fee for the Trophy Dash. Details available during sign-in at the picnic.

Event goes on rain or shine. Can’t wait to see you and your Cairns there!

A Note About Premium Lists

Premium lists for the Stumptown Cluster (CTCA Roving) and the Combined Specialties (CRCTC) are mailed separately. You will want to consult both premium lists for accurate entry information for the Roving and Regional specialties - even when entering online.

The premium list for the earthdog tests will be posted online here, and on the CTCA events calendar. Unlike conformation events, gate (day-of) entries will be permitted for the earthdog tests, subject to entry closing times posted in the premium lists. Pre-entries are of course welcome; they typically offer a pre-entry discount and pre-entries are a considerable kindness to the event secretary.

Our Mascot

mascot image

Sa'cairn'gawea - A pun perhaps, but there is much to admire and honor about both our mascot's namesake, and our breed. Rosie, a local Cairn, strikes a pose that evokes for us the spirits of courage, adventure, and generosity.
